According to Allergy UK, 2% of the population suffer from a food allergy, that’s a staggering 1.2 million people with a serious allergic reaction from common foods such as milk, dairy and wheat. And, with the increase in celebrity endorsed faddy diets and self-diagnosis, it is also estimated that 20% of people believe they are suffering from a food intolerance or sensitivity which has an impact on their daily lives.
For many people, this means drastically changing their diets – not only the basics such as bread and milk but also life’s luxuries like chocolate. In the face of such alarming statistics, one company who are trying to address these issues is Humdinger Foods, who launched their revolutionary Dairy Free Rice Crackle bar last year, to provide a delicious alternative to milk chocolate for those with food allergies or intolerances. Now, after receiving some fantastic feedback from UK consumers, the company are launching a new addition to the range – Tangerine, inspired by the classic chocolate orange.
Whilst the Dairy Free range has been specially created for those with food intolerances and allergies, the bars are also ideally suited to those chocolate lovers who want to either cut down their dairy consumption or who are following a special diet.
What’s more, Dairy Free bars are made with soya flour, derived from non-genetically modified ingredients, which is then blended with premium cocoa liquor to produce a smooth European style chocolate. This unique patented process ensures that the essential goodness of soya, including fibre, phytoestrogens, vitamin E, calcium and Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are retained.
FOOD ALLERGIES & INTOLERANCES – THE FACTS:
• Food allergy: specific form of intolerance involving the abnormal reaction of a person’s immune system to a food substance, often leading to vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, wheezing, swelling of the airways etc.
• Food intolerance / sensitivity: inability to digest a particular food substance due to a lacking enzyme which allows the substance to pass undigested into the large intestine. Symptoms include as diarrhea but will often improve or disappear over time.
• Coeliac disease: severe allergy to gluten, wheat, rye, barley and oats. Latest figures show 1 in 100 people in the UK have a Coeliac disorder and the figure is rising.
• Children: rates of food allergy are higher amongst children (5-7%), the majority outgrow their allergy before starting school
• Milk allergy: milk can be found in many unlikely foods and is often used in very small quantities in manufactured goods such as crisps, specialist breads, frozen ready meals and chocolate. A 25 per cent rule governing compound ingredients means that manufacturers and retailers are under no legal obligation to include very small amounts in the ingredient list.

Dairy Free bars are free from the following:
Lactose & Dairy:
Intolerance to dairy products is a relatively common affliction and can be mild or severe, permanent or temporary. It occurs when the digestive system is unable to produce enough lactose; the enzyme needed to breakdown the lactose sugar in food. Left undigested, this sugar ferments and can cause nausea, diarrhoea, bloating, cramping and gas.
Some individuals who only suffer a mild form of intolerance can still eat small amounts of milk products, especially if eaten with other foods. Certain cheeses can sometimes be eaten without ill effects, as can yoghurt, which contains bacteria that aids in the digestion of lactose.
Humdinger goes to extremes to keep equipment and ingredient structure dairy free. We believe dietary restrictions do not mean sacrificing entire food categories or flavour. Chocolate lovers who suffer from lactose intolerance can enjoy the rich flavours of chocolate again in baked goods, desserts and at snack time.
Gluten:
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, oats, barley, rye, spelt and kamut. Coeliac disease is genetic and can be diagnosed with blood tests or biopsy of the villi, tiny finger like structures along the lining of the small intestine responsible for absorbing nutrients into the bloodstream.
Symptoms include gas, muscle cramps, painful skin rash, abdominal bloating, chronic diarrhoea, fatigue, joint pain, weight loss and delayed growth.
It is essential that people with celiac disease completely eliminate gluten from their diet, present in most biscuits, cakes and pastries and some chocolate bars. Research also shows that many people with Coeliac disease are more likely to be lactose intolerant, further restricting their choice when it comes to sweet treats.
Wheat:
Wheat allergy is common, particularly among babies. One of the main allergens in wheat is a protein called gliadin, which is found in gluten. Because of this, people with a wheat allergy are sometimes recommended to eat a gluten-free diet.
Wheat has also been linked with gastrointestinal symptoms (people experiencing these symptoms are likely to have other intolerances such as a reaction to cows’ milk protein), asthma, urticaria (skin rash) and eczema.

Cholesterol:
High cholesterol can affect anyone but is particularly common amongst women over 55 and men under 55, due to a diet high in saturated fat. The major sources of saturates in the UK diet include cooking fats and spreads (e.g. butter, margarine, lard), fatty meats and meat products, full fat milk and dairy products, chips, biscuits, cakes, pastries and confectionery.
Genetic factors combined with eating too much saturated fat are the main reasons for high levels of cholesterol, increasing the risk of heart attacks. Reducing the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol you eat is an important step in maintaining your blood cholesterol levels.
