5 a day

What is 5-A-DAY?

The Government recommends an intake of at least five portions of fruit or veg per person per day to help reduce the risk of some cancers heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and other many chronic conditions (Department of Health 1994, Department of Health 1998, WHO 2000).

NHS Choices points out that fruit and veg are usually low in fat and calories, helping you to maintain a healthy weight and avoid obesity. They also say that 5 a day of fruit and veg gives you a good source of important vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre plus contributing to a balanced healthy eating diet with plenty of delicious fruit and veg varieties to choose from!

Why fruit and veg?

Fruit and vegetables are good sources of many vitamins and minerals. In addition, they contain a range of other compounds called phytochemicals, including flavonoids, glucosiniolates and phyto-oestrogens.

These have a range of beneficial effects on the body. They act as antioxidants which can help prevent damage to tissues that is associated with the development of cardiovascular disease and some cancers. Furthermore, it is thought that nutrients and phytochemicals act in concert to influence the risk of certain chronic diseases.
